Ann Arbor boasts a rich and diverse sports culture that caters to enthusiasts of all levels. From the University of Michigan’s storied athletic programs to local high school teams and community clubs, there’s something for everyone.
University of Michigan Athletics
The University of Michigan, known for its “Go Blue!” spirit, offers 27 varsity intercollegiate sports, including 13 men’s teams and 14 women’s teams. These teams compete in the Big Ten Conference, with the exception of women’s water polo, which participates in the Collegiate Water Polo Association. The university’s athletic tradition dates back to 1865, with the Wolverines claiming more than 50 national championships in 12 sports. Students, faculty, and staff also engage in numerous intramural, club sports, and fitness activities, fostering a vibrant campus sports culture.
High School Sports
Ann Arbor’s high schools provide a variety of athletic opportunities for students. For instance, Skyline High School offers a range of sports across different seasons. In the fall, girls can participate in crew/rowing, cross country, field hockey, golf, swimming, and volleyball, while boys have options like crew/rowing, cross country, football, soccer, tennis, and water polo. Co-ed sports include equestrian, pompon, and sports medicine. Winter sports feature basketball, bowling, and ice hockey for both genders, with additional co-ed options like figure skating. Spring sports include crew/rowing, lacrosse, softball, soccer, tennis, track, and water polo for girls, and baseball, crew/rowing, golf, lacrosse, and track for boys.
Similarly, Father Gabriel Richard Catholic High School offers a comprehensive athletics program with roughly 40 teams in 29 sports. The school emphasizes sportsmanship, humility, integrity, enthusiasm, leadership, and determination, aiming to develop students’ physical and mental abilities through sports.
Community Sports
Beyond school-based athletics, Ann Arbor supports community sports organizations. AFC Ann Arbor, for example, is a soccer club established in 2014. The men’s team competes in USL League Two, while the women’s team participates in the USL W League. The club provides opportunities for local athletes to engage in competitive soccer and fosters community involvement in the sport.
For those interested in participating in sports at various levels, the University of Michigan offers club sports that are student-led and compete against other colleges and universities nationwide. These clubs cover a wide range of activities, providing opportunities for students to engage in sports beyond the varsity level.
Ann Arbor’s sports scene is a testament to the community’s dedication to athletic excellence and inclusivity, offering numerous avenues for residents to engage in sports, whether as participants or supporters.
